While navigating with the RouteYou app, you'll receive visual instructions on your device screen. This way, you can see exactly which direction to go at every turn or route change. These visual instructions are enabled by default and cannot be turned off.
Navigation instructions are available with a RouteYou Plus account or higher.
How do visual instructions work?
While navigating, you'll always see a green instruction banner at the top of your screen. This banner shows not only your next turn (including arrow, street name, any numbered nodes, and remaining distance), but also gives you a 'Then' instruction. That way, you're always fully prepared for the next step right after your current turn.
In addition to route instructions, you can choose to receive handy pop-up alerts at the bottom of your screen as you approach a location:
- Points of interest (POIs): Automatically receive information about nearby points of interest (for example, Restaurant De Gulden Kip).
- Issues and obstacles: Receive timely alerts reported by other users or authors along the route. Use the 'No longer there' or 'Confirm' buttons to provide instant feedback on the current situation.
Turning these alerts on or off:
You can choose which visual alerts you receive:
- While navigating, tap the round white button with the three dots in the bottom right corner
.
- In the menu that opens, use the toggles to turn Next POI alert and Upcoming issues alert on or off.
You can also display navigation instructions on your smartphone's lock screen. This keeps you from having to leave your screen active continuously, saving significant battery power while walking, cycling, or driving.
Aren't instructions showing up on your lock screen? Check if notifications for the RouteYou app are allowed in your phone's settings.
- Open your phone's Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select RouteYou from the list.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn on 'Allow notifications'.
- Make sure the Lock screen option is checked
On Samsung devices, explicitly check Lock screen, Status bar, and Pop-up.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap RouteYou.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn on 'Allow Notifications'.
- Under Alerts, make sure the Lock Screen option is checked.
Quick check: Start navigation in the RouteYou app and lock your phone. As you approach a navigation point, the instruction will pop up on your screen.
In addition to visual instructions on your screen, our Turn-by-Turn navigation (TBT) also offers voice guidance.
