In addition to the extensive options to customize your printout, many organizations also choose to edit the map itself. This provides extra possibilities to fully tailor the map to your event.
Some examples of why you might want to edit the map:
- Add sponsor logos to the map
- Make checkpoint labels clearly visible
- Indicate sponsor locations on the map
- Add notes to the map for extra information or instructions
With these adjustments, you ensure your map is not only functional but also professional and recognizable.
Do you want to easily edit the map in a program like Paint or any other basic editing tool? Then, under “more options,” choose Image as output format. This allows you to quickly make notes on the map or small edits.
Do you need more advanced edits, such as adding layers, professional layouts, or combining with other documents? Then choose PDF as the output format. This format is ideal for detailed adjustments and professional printing.
When you edit a map (for example, by making cutouts), you must always keep the RouteYou source reference including the logo and other map sources. These references appear on the standard RouteYou overview prints.
In addition, the royalty-free usage terms also apply to any parts of the map you integrate into a poster, leaflet, or other printed format.
- For personal use and small quantities (fewer than 10 prints), you don’t need to purchase a royalty-free map.
- For larger quantities (rule of thumb: more than 10 copies), such as printing maps or guides, a royalty-free license is required. This can be arranged individually or via a Premium account.
The simple way to edit prints
Google Drawings is a free drawing tool that you can open via this link in your browser. You can easily add text elements, symbols, photos, and more to the map.
Tips:
- You must print your map as an IMAGE in order to import it into Google Drawings.
- If you’re using Chrome, you can install Google Drawings and link it to your browser. That way, editing a map becomes even easier.

MiniPaint is an online environment that lets you further edit raster images.
The steps to use it are as follows:
1) Create a printout and save it as output format IMAGE (not PDF, which is the default). You can set this in the print options (see “More options”).
2) Save that IMAGE file in a folder on your computer.
3) Open miniPaint and upload the IMAGE you want to edit further.
