With a Premium account or higher, you can collaborate on a route with multiple people. Co-authoring lets you give other RouteYou users permission to help manage and edit your route. Perfect for planning a trip or event with club members or coworkers. A co-author has the same editing rights as you — making teamwork smooth and efficient.
HEADS UP
You can’t edit a route at the same time as someone else.
If a co-author is actively editing the route, you’ll see a message at the top of the route planner letting you know. So make sure to coordinate who edits when.
How does it work?
How do you add a co-author to your route?
BEFORE YOU START
To use the co-author feature, at least one member of the group needs to have a Premium Account.
- First step: create a group (1a).
Learn how to create a group here. - Then invite one or more people to join the group as members (1b).
- To make a group member a co-author, they need to have at least the 'author' role. Once they’ve joined, you can upgrade them to author (1c).

You can also create a group with just two people: you and a friend.
- Create a new route or pick an existing one you made — let’s call it route x.
- Go to Edit > Basic Data.
- In the co-authors field, click Edit again. A pop-up will appear where you can link the group (2a).
Under Co-authors, you’ll now see the group’s avatar, a dot, and the avatars of the group members who have the 'author' role. These authors can now edit route x too (2b).
FYI
Anyone with the 'author' role in a group linked to a Premium Account can assign co-author rights to their own routes.
Co-authors automatically get a message that they can edit route x.
If one co-author is editing, others have to wait.
The original creator of the route always stays an author.
Frequently Asked Questions
Linking a group to a route as co-authors is not the same as linking a route to a group!
Linking a group to a route (co-authoring)
When you link a group to a route, you’re giving the authors in that group permission to edit your route.
This only works if at least one group member has a Premium Account.
See above for how to add co-authors.
Linking a route to a group (visibility)
When you link a route to a group, it becomes visible within that group and to all group members.

Note: this doesn’t mean group members can automatically edit the route — even if they’re authors or higher.
To give editing rights, you need to explicitly allow it in the route’s Basic Info under Co-authors.
