At a point of interest (POI), you’ll see a scoring system represented by a set of dots.
The simplest explanation of the score is that it measures the importance of the POI. However, technically, it’s more accurate to say that it measures the informational value of a POI.
In other words, it indicates how much information is available about this POI on Routeyou. The indirect assumption is that the more information there is about the POI and the location, the more important that POI becomes.
The score of a POI is determined by the presence or quality of the following elements:
- Type: a specific type of POI is better than a general one
- Optimal length of text (not too long but also not too short)
- A photo or a video
- A reference to a source or a website with more information
- Links to features, themes, or groups
Note! Too many links and incorrect information will be penalized. - Information in multiple languages
- Multiple POIs linked to the same location
- Different authors adding information to the same location
In searches, the score plays an important role, but it is not the only factor that determines whether a POI ranks higher or lower in the 'Relevance' list. Other factors are also taken into account, such as:
- Recency
- Number of views
- Number of users marking this POI as a favorite

Frequently Asked Questions
It's true that the score we use here has nothing to do with the quality of service offered at a specific location. Let alone that it’s linked to other rating systems like Michelin stars. Just because a museum has a score of 5 doesn’t mean the service there is fantastic. Or vice versa, just because a hotel has a score of 1 doesn't necessarily mean it isn't a good hotel.
The score (the number of dots) is a measure of the amount of information and, indirectly, the importance of a POI (see above).
